How to Resize an Image Without Losing Quality
By Sara Malik
You open a photo and it is lying on its side, or the text in it is written backwards. It is a common annoyance, and it is easy to fix. Here is why it happens and how to rotate or flip any image in a few clicks.
Phones usually do not rotate the actual pixels when you hold them in portrait or landscape. Instead they save a small orientation flag alongside the picture. Some apps, websites and upload forms ignore that flag, so the photo shows up sideways or upside down.
Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre. Flipping mirrors it, either left to right (horizontal) or top to bottom (vertical).
Flipping is useful when text in a photo appears backwards. Some phones and apps save selfies mirrored, and a horizontal flip puts the text back the right way round.
The same tool works well for scanned documents that were fed in sideways and for screenshots taken in the wrong orientation. After rotating, you may want to shrink the file with the Image Compressor before emailing it.
Upload it to the Rotate & Flip tool, press the 90° button until it looks right and download the result.
Phones store a rotation flag with the picture, and some websites or apps ignore it. Rotating and saving the image fixes the orientation.
