How to Crop a Photo to a Square for Instagram

CroppingBy Sara Malik3 min read

A square crop is the safest shape for social media. It looks tidy in a feed, works for profile pictures and keeps your subject in focus. Here is how to crop a photo to a perfect 1:1 square for free and prepare it for Instagram.

Why square?

A 1:1 image displays the same way almost everywhere, so you do not have to worry about edges being cut off. Instagram also supports portrait and landscape posts, so square is not the only option, but it is a dependable default.

How to crop to a square

  1. Open the Crop tool and upload your photo.
  2. Choose the 1:1 aspect ratio.
  3. Move the crop area so your subject sits where you want it.
  4. Click Apply and download the cropped image.
  5. Optional: open the Image Resizer and use the Instagram Post preset to get exactly 1080 × 1080.

Composition tips

  • Place your subject slightly off-centre, using the rule of thirds, for a more interesting picture.
  • Leave a little breathing room around the subject.
  • Crop out distractions near the edges.
  • Start from the highest-resolution original, because cropping removes pixels.
  • Avoid cutting people at the joints, such as wrists or ankles.

Other ratios worth knowing

  • 4:3 and 3:2 are classic photo shapes.
  • 16:9 is the standard widescreen landscape shape.
  • 9:16 is the vertical shape used for stories and short videos.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a square Instagram photo?

1080 × 1080 pixels is the standard size for a square post. Crop to 1:1, then resize to 1080 × 1080.

Will cropping reduce my photo quality?

No. Cropping only removes the outer area, and the part you keep stays at its original resolution.
